Bohemian, or Boho, is a style of design that is full of fun eclectic elements.  It contains warm earth colors, patterns and textures.  It is often complimented by vintage furniture and art!!

First, take stalk of what you already have.  Decorating is so fun, but it doesn’t mean it has to cost a ton.  Look around your home, chances are you have already a bunch of neat accessories or pieces of furniture that can be re-purposed or upcycled.  If you have them, use them!

Next come book a free consultation with our expert Showhome Furniture designers.  We spend thousands of dollars hiring the most expert designers in the city and offer this free service to our customers because we know having expert advise can make all the difference in every decorating project.

Once you have your free consultation booked, and you have located what accessories or furniture that you already have on hand, it is time to decide what style of boho you are looking for.  Some Boho rooms use bright and bold colours to catch your eye, while others stick to a softer palettes and rely more on the layering of textures to bring it all together.

Regardless of what style you are going for, for an authentic boho look, stick to nature-inspired elements.  Earthy tones, natural furniture and soft-textures are some of the most important aspects of a Boho room.

Painting your wall is an inexpensive way to start your Boho room project.  My daughter Ellice is an expert painter and loves to work magic on her walls.  Mixing colours and techniques can really add a bit of magic to your Boho room.

Remember to layer.  If you have a small chair in your room add a soft blanket and a long haired pillow.  Put a rug on the floor and add plants on the table and ground.  All this layering make the room feel cozy and very Bohemian!!

How A Showhome Makeover Changed My Life

This is a true experience from one of our Showhome Furniture Customers:

It was late at night, when I was almost in tears that I confessed to my husband that I just needed a break! We had seven kids, were in the middle of renovating our basement and my well was dry. I knew that being a mother to so many children was truly my dream, and so was finishing my basement. At that moment though, my dream just seemed less romantic than I had imagined and a lot harder. My husband listened to me patiently and then agreed to take me away.

After a few phone calls to grandparents the next day our trip was planned. In just two days, my husband, two oldest kids and I were going to go down to Utah for an educational conference. The five younger kids would be watched by my parents. This was a dream come true and I was so grateful for my husband and my parents for helping me get the break I knew I really needed.

The week was wonderful and I came back to my home refreshed and ready to hug each of my babies, wipe their tears, listen to their stories and be their happy mama once more. Truly being a mother is my favorite thing in the world and I was anxious to get home.

It was late when I got home, and to my surprise my home was packed. Two of my sisters, as well as all their kids were there, along with a few neighborhood kids and more. I was confused and then over whelmed to tears. In every single room of my house, my home was transformed. Walls were painted, couches replaced, new furniture was everywhere and so were smiling delighted faces. I was floored! Who arranged for all of these miracles to happen?

It was then I was brought downstairs to my junky unfinished basement. I was stunned. New flooring had been laid, drywall had been fixed, stools lined my bar, new chairs and rugs filled the room. Without me even knowing it, my whole house was transformed by the Showhome Furniture crew. Somehow they had heard about my family and came to the rescue. They gathered my family and neighbors and in just one week did months worth of renovations!

That night my house was transformed, but more than that, my heart was transformed. Sometimes as a mother, especially a mother of many children, your time is taken up by so many people you need to take care of that you get tired. You sometimes wish that there was someone there to take care of you. This is not something most mothers expect, and I certainly did not. The fact that so many people cared enough about me to help me with a task so overwhelming and daunting.

My life was forever changed by their love, their attention to detail and generosity!

5 Tips For Making Thanksgiving Amazing!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and now that I am back in Canada, I have to say that this year is already meaning more to me than ever before.  There is something about spending six months surrounded by people who have so little material wealth, and yet have such depth and gratitude that just humbled my family and I.  We all know there are those who live at a different standard than us, but after sitting on their floors, and hearing their stories, my life has been changed forever.

To make this Thanksgiving, more about the thanks and giving than the food I have put together some quick but meaningful ways to really appreciate this amazing country that we live in.

Decorate your table with items that inspires gratitude and reminds us to be thankful.  Your tablecloth, or a sign on the wall, can remind all who come to dine, the reason why we come to dine-to give thanks.  At Showhome Furniture, we source the most beautiful tables from all around the world because we know that eating together as a family is very important to the success of your family.

Make it easy for people to give thanks.  Put out a pen and a simple sheet of paper with the words “I am thankful for” by each place setting.  Take a moment before bringing out the food to think about what you are thankful for and write it down.  During dinner, it is fun to read out what we are thankful for.

If you have kids, another activity is to draw a huge turkey on some poster board.  Get kids to write out what they are thankful for on feathers and stick them on the turkey.  It is a fun way to visualize all that we have.

I love giving my kids a new gratitude journal on Thanksgiving.  At Showhome Furniture, we know that so many diseases and mental illnesses can actually be helped greatly by the habit of giving thanks.  We try hard to cultivate this into our family culture.

When you go to buy a turkey, think about buying an extra one for someone who you know might need a little bit of love.  If you don’t know anyone who would appreciate a turkey, you can call your local food bank and donate a turkey there-or better yet, sign up as a family to serve at the food bank on Thanksgiving.  One of my favorite memories as a family is when we would go to our local homeless shelter and feed the people there, talk to them and entertain them with my kids singing.  I am sure they were doing us a favor at times watching my silly girls perform and I am very grateful for their attentiveness and the kind way everyone just accepted us for who we were.

At Showhome Furniture, we would be amiss to not end this post of what we are grateful for if we did not mention you, our valued friends.  Without your support, we would not be able to bring in such unique handmade wonderful furniture from all around the world.  Because we love you, we will give whoever mentions this blog post 30% off any regularly priced dining room table!!

What do you guys do to express your gratitude for all that you enjoy??  I would love to hear from you because I am always looking for new ways to bring meaning into this season.

7 Fun Ways To Get Ready For Valentines Day

I ran into the store to grab some food for my kids and my eye caught a bright red heart that was for sale.  It caught me by surprise, with Christmas just being over, and then I remembered Valentines Day!

I love Valentines Day.  With six daughters, love, romance, pink and candy is definitely something that our family goes all out for!

Not everyone is wanting to add streamers and hearts to their kids doors, but even those who are a little less outrageous with their decorations can prepare for this special day.

Here are seven simple ways to bring Valentines Day into your decor.  When done properly, you may not want to take them down when February 14th is over.

First, add a comfortable chair to your living room.  Everyone should have one in their living room anyways, but if by chance you do not have one, this is the time to get one.   At Showhome Furniture our number one selling chair is our nest chair, and it is a perfect addition to any room.  If you don’t have a comfy chair to cuddle up to and can’t get one at this time, don’t despair, our next suggestions do not require any such large purchases.  If you do get our nest chair, remember to get our hassle free 5 year no hassle warranty.  Also, remember to check out our facebook page regularly, as we love to give nest chairs away!!

The easiest thing is to do to add love into you living room is to grab some pink, red or gold pillows for the couch.  Be bold and go for the extra soft pillows, after all this is the season of love, laughter and cuddles.  Remember, Valentine pillows do not have to be hearts.  The idea is just to add a bit of pink or red into your existing decor.

Next grab a soft luxurious blanket.  It doesn’t have to be bright pink if it doesn’t match your decor, go for something more subtle.

Valentines Day is the perfect excuse to buy a delightful soft rug that you can use all year round.

Once you have a few special pillows, a cozy blanket, a thick rug, it is time to bring in some flowers.  Flowers are beautiful any time of the year, but sometimes we forget this.  Our Showhome Furniture tip, buy the flowers a week before the big day since flower bought on Valentines day are going to be double the price come February 14th.

The next tip for celebrating Valentines Day is something my kids LOVE!!!  It is the Hot Cocoa Bar!!!!!  Who doesn’t love an excuse to make themselves a sweet drink, and there is something about sipping cocoa that makes us slow down and savor the moments, and after all that is what Valentines Day is really about, savoring the amazing people you love in your life.

Lastly, add in some hearts and candy!!!

What are your favorite ways of celebrating Valentines Day?
